Talk isn't cheap. In fact, when managers have meaningful exchanges with their employees, they don't only show they care. Gallup has found that they also add value to their organization's bottom line.

"Millennials are among the savviest of shoppers, and they're poised to spend more on their purchases," says one retail expert. These young consumers use a variety of shopping channels, posing huge challenges to retailers who want to target them.

As companies compete in today's "new normal," many have been redefining and refocusing their branded offerings. But it's going to take a lot more than tweaking price and product to build a lasting customer relationship now and in the future.
