Exactly What Is Talent, Anyway?

Knowledge and skills can be learned, but talent is enduring

The concept of talent is elusive -- it lacks substance, specificity. Perhaps that's part of the reason so many people have trouble applying it to themselves. Carefully examining and refining the concept of talent may make it easier for you to recognize it in yourself and others, in order to make the most of it in your daily life. What is it, for example, that distinguishes talent from related -- but very different -- concepts, such as competency or style?
Steve Crabtree has developed and produced publications for The Gallup Organization since joining the company in 1993. He contributed to writing Building Engaged Schools, Gallup's book on education reform. Crabtree currently leads the production of published material for the Gallup World Poll, a groundbreaking worldwide survey launched in 2006. He is also a contributing writer to the Gallup Management Journal.
